Scripture: Romans Chapter 2

You may be saying, "What terrible people you have been talking about!" But you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you do these very same things.

And we know that God, in his justice, will punish anyone who does such things.

Do you think that God will judge and condemn others for doing them and not judge you when you do them, too?

Don't you realize how kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Or don't you care? Can't you see how kind he has been in giving you time to turn from your sin?

But no, you won't listen. So you are storing up terrible punishment for yourself because of your stubbornness in refusing to turn from your sin. For there is going to come a day of judgment when God, the just judge of all the world,

will judge all people according to what they have done.

He will give eternal life to those who persist in doing what is good, seeking after the glory and honor and immortality that God offers.

But he will pour out his anger and wrath on those who live for themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and practice evil deeds.

There will be trouble and calamity for everyone who keeps on sinning--for the Jew first and also for the Gentile.

But there will be glory and honor and peace from God for all who do good--for the Jew first and also for the Gentile.

For God does not show favoritism.

God will punish the Gentiles when they sin, even though they never had God's written law. And he will punish the Jews when they sin, for they do have the law.

For it is not merely knowing the law that brings God's approval. Those who obey the law will be declared right in God's sight.

Even when Gentiles, who do not have God's written law, instinctively follow what the law says, they show that in their hearts they know right from wrong.

They demonstrate that God's law is written within them, for their own consciences either accuse them or tell them they are doing what is right.

The day will surely come when God, by Jesus Christ, will judge everyone's secret life. This is my message.

If you are a Jew, you are relying on God's law for your special relationship with him. You boast that all is well between yourself and God.

Yes, you know what he wants; you know right from wrong because you have been taught his law.

You are convinced that you are a guide for the blind and a beacon light for people who are lost in darkness without God.

You think you can instruct the ignorant and teach children the ways of God. For you are certain that in God's law you have complete knowledge and truth.

Well then, if you teach others, why don't you teach yourself? You tell others not to steal, but do you steal?

You say it is wrong to commit adultery, but do you do it? You condemn idolatry, but do you steal from pagan temples?

You are so proud of knowing the law, but you dishonor God by breaking it.

No wonder the Scriptures say, "The world blasphemes the name of God because of you."

The Jewish ceremony of circumcision is worth something only if you obey God's law. But if you don't obey God's law, you are no better off than an uncircumcised Gentile.

And if the Gentiles obey God's law, won't God give them all the rights and honors of being his own people?

In fact, uncircumcised Gentiles who keep God's law will be much better off than you Jews who are circumcised and know so much about God's law but don't obey it.

For you are not a true Jew just because you were born of Jewish parents or because you have gone through the Jewish ceremony of circumcision.

No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God. And true circumcision is not a cutting of the body but a change of heart produced by God's Spirit. Whoever has that kind of change seeks praise from God, not from people.

Personal Reflections from the Word

Paul exhorts the Jews (under the law) to be faithful to the law; but warns them that just the outward appearance of obedience isn't enough; they must truly be faithful to the observance of the law because it is will lead to pleasing God, and God knows the heart of man.

He further supports the above statements by talking about circumcision. One can have the outward external signs of obedience; but more importantly is the circumcision of the heart. Being obedient out of honor to God from the heart is of greater importance than just merely keeping the law because it is required.

Paul also states that just as many under the law will be seen unrighteous as those who are not under the law (gentiles). Boasting about being faithful and not keeping the law will condemn you at the judgement. A man will be judged according to the adherence of God's commands and keeping His word . . . mere obedience to the law cannot protect you from this righteous judgement.

Scripture Reference: Romans Chapter 1

Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit[a] of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God[b] by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him and for his name's sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.

To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints:

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul's Longing to Visit Rome

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. God, whom I serve with my whole heart in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God's will the way may be opened for me to come to you.

I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong— that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith. I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.

I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are at Rome.

I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last,[c] just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."[d]

God's Wrath Against Mankind

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

Personal Reflections from God’s Word

Paul identifies himself as a servant chosen by God to do the work of evangelism. The message of salvation is for all men both Jew and Gentile.

Paul describes his longing to visit Rome. He desires to visit them because he had been separated from them for so long. He also encourages their good works which he has heard of and gives God praise. He wants to come and share ministry with them to tell them the marvelous things God is doing and to also hear from them the wonderful things that God is doing in them. This way, both can be encouraged and built up in the faith.

Paul warns that God will give you over to your sinful desires if you are unwilling to follow Him and that sin leads to death. Here, he is encouraging the Romans to remain steadfast and faithful to the good works they were doing. Remember, he tells them, from the beginning of time, God has made himself known - - - through his creation of all things. Man has even turned that into sin by worshiping the creation rather than the creator. Paul further states that the sinfulness of those who continue in darkness extends beyond themselves to the encouragement of others to join in (with no regard for the truth of God's word). By doing this, they are approving of sin which will eternally separate us from God.

Prayer for the Journey

Lord,

Just as Paul longed to share the good news with the church at Rome, so may we desire to share our faith with others as well. May we also have the heart of an evangelist to encourage those outside of the faith to accept Jesus and turn from their sin. As we share our joys with others, may we also be encouraged by the joys that others have in service to you. In this way, we will rejoice in the Lord and give you the glory.

Scripture Passage: 1 John Chapters 1-5
After reading John McArthur's Bible study plan, I was determined to start where he did, and try this method. I become so easily destracted by the Psalms, Proverb, Old and New Testament reading plans and needed a change. After trying this method, I found it to be refreshing. Why not join me?

Reading Plan
For 30 days, I will read over the five chapters of 1 John. Each day as I read over the passages, I will keep a journal of how God is speaking to me. At the end of each week, I'll review the weekly journal pages and take time to thank God for his Word.

Scripture: 1 John Chapter 1

The Word of Life

1That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4We write this to make our[a] joy complete.

Walking in the light

5This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all[b] sin.

8If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.

Personal Reflections

It isn’t just enough to know God. We must truly live in relationship with him. As I read this scripture, I am convicted that God is not satisfied with just my lip service (especially when it doesn’t align with my heart and walk). How, then, do we think that God could ever be pleased with us? Thank God he has made a way. We can never merit God’s grace, it is freely bestowed on all who believe. God is calling us to walk in his light. The more we walk in his light, the better his light can shine through us. God knows that we are going to fail . . . this is why he sent Jesus to accept the sin of the world on himself so that we could receive forgiveness and be cleansed of all unrighteousness.

Praise God! When we confess our sin, he is faithful to forgive us our sins. Talk to him! Ask for forgiveness. He is waiting to hear from you! Live in relationship with him and allow his light to shine through you.

Prayer for the Journey

Lord,

Forgive us our sins and accept our apology for not walking in relationship with you consistently. We know that your grace is sufficient, so Lord, we thank and praise you for allow us forgiveness through the blood of Jesus, Your Son, and Our Savior.

Lord, Your greatness is overwhelming. You are so mighty! At your command the mountains could be cast into the sea and disolved; yet in your compassion, you have provided a way for us to be your people forever. We love and adore you for ONLY YOU are worthy of the praise. Amen

Personal Reflections from God’s Word

“Make a Joyful Noise”

All of God’s creation has been created to bring glory and honor to Him. Making a joyful noise requires that we live our lives in such a way as to bring honor and glory to Him. In this way, all people will hear and be drawn to Him.

“Serve the Lord with Gladness”

In our service, we are to be joyful. In this way, people will see that serving God brings joy and fulfillment. Let your joy be shown!

“Know that the Lord is God”

Knowing that the Lord is God means that we make Him the Lord of our lives. In this way we become His sheep, doing His bidding, and honoring and glorifying Him.

“Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise”

When we come before the Lord, we must be thankful for the things He has allowed us the opportunity to experience and do. When we go out from Him (to serve) we must do so with praise for Him so that others will see His good works and glorify His name.

We do all these things because the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endures to all generations.

Prayer for the Journey

Lord,

May our lives resound with Your praise. May thanks be ever on our lips with the understanding that You are God and we have been created to bring honor and glory to You ALONE.

Scripture: Hebrews 12:1-2

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress. And let us run with endurance the race that God has set before us. - [Hebrews 12:1 NLT]

We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, on whom our faith depends from start to finish. He was willing to die a shameful death on the cross because of the joy he knew would be his afterward. Now he is seated in the place of highest honor beside God's throne in heaven. - [Hebrews 12:2 NLT]

Personal Reflections on God’s Word

“Surrounded by witnesses to a Life of Faith”

How encouraging it is to look to the past and see those who have been examples of faith, and to also see those who are following in those footsteps in the present. This is just how God planned it! Remember the command from God’s Word contained in the Shama – “Hear, O Israel” (Deuteronomy 6:4-9). These are the first verses of scripture committed to memory by Jewish children. “Hear, O Israel,” is the command. The Shema Blessing is the central prayer of the Jewish prayer book (Siddur). What is being taught to the children is to “hear with understanding or discernment.” Not only are children to hear God’s word, but to also follow the teachings that they are learning. The perpetuation or transmission of faith and truth into the hearts of each new generation was vital to continued obedience and the privilege of remaining in the land where Israel could enjoy its blessings and fulfill God’s purposes for them as a priesthood nation to the nations. We, too, are given the same privilege and must pass down this awesome responsibility to our future generations.

“Strip off the weight that slows us down”

What are the things that keep you from being committed? These are the things that we are to lay aside! These are difficult choices at times, because they often involve making adjustments to family time, leisurely fun, and selfish wishes and desires. These are the things that we can make more important than they really are and are willing to put before the things that God is calling us to do. Don’t get me wrong, “God thinks family is important,” but He also wants us to make the MAIN THING – THE MAIN THING.

“Sin that easily hinders our progress”

It is difficult to acknowledge our own sins. SIN IN OUR LIVES is not as hidden as we would like to think. Believe me! Those around us easily see the things that are our WEAKNESSES. The wonderful news is, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse us from our sins.” Do you want some more good news? When you confess your sins, the weight is lifted and your burden is lightened - IMMEDIATELY. The amazing thing, God is a God of second chances. Aren’t you glad to hear this? Now, quit beating yourself up and get back in the race.

“Keep Your Eyes on Jesus”

How do we stay in the race and keep moving forward? Remember, He doesn’t call us to WIN THE RACE. He just requires that we KEEP MOVING TOWARD THE FINISH LINE. The way we remain focused and strengthened is to KEEP OUR EYES ON JESUS – the One who STRENGTHENS our FAITH from START TO FINISH.

Prayer for the Journey

Lord,

Help us remember that WINNING THE RACE isn’t as important as MOVING TOWARD THE FINISH LINE. Our reward comes in seeing other encouraged by our faithfulness to the journey and ultimately gaining the prize of the high calling in Christ, Jesus our Lord and Savior. Amen.

“Let there be real harmony . . . “

· “Let there be” - implies that we have to be intentional about it

1. Harmony will not just happen – we have to create an atmosphere and environment conducive to harmony

2. Keeping our physical surroundings neat and orderly will affect our mental and emotional well-being as a choir

“Being of One Mind – United in Thought and Purpose”

· “Being of One Mind” – implies that we will choose to DEFEND our UNITY and PURPOSE as a choir and as WORSHIP LEADERS. Our thoughts and purposes have to be clearly defined and we must all support and defend them regardless of how difficult it may become. We have all heard the scripture, “Satan, like a roaring lion, is seeking to devour those of us who are weak.”

1. Clearly defined thoughts and purposes

2. Recognize that Opposition will come – (“Satan is like a Roaring Lion.”)

3. We must be on Guard – (Being steadfast in our commitments to ministry, mission, and purpose)

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.
Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home.
The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot Change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude... I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.
And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes.

Prayer for the Journey

Lord, Indeed our attitude colors the way we are perceived and the way we perceive others. May we be forever mindful that we are ultimately to please you – for YOU created everything, and for YOU, everything was created. May our attitude always reflect our love and adoration for YOU, and forgive us when seek our own ways above YOURS. Amen.

“Whatever you do”

This passage doesn’t say, “In some things,” but is says, “In all things.” Paul, speaking to the Church of Colossae, is reminding them to be faithful in performing their responsibilities to the best of their abilities - - - whether they are doing these duties for God or for men. In doing so, our whole heart will be in the performing of our duties, and THIS PLEASES GOD!

“Heartily, as to the Lord”

Paul goes on to say that we must also perform these duties with great enthusiasm and joy for the Lord - - - knowing that all the honor and glory in all things is for Him. When I read this passage, I think of the many times I’ve heard people say, “Boy, I’m glad that’s over (myself included)!.” When we hear statements like this, it conjures up thoughts of dread and merely doing something out of obligation. God’s word speaks strongly against this. Think of all the passages you have heard and read concerning this very idea: “. . . putting your hand to the plow and turning back.” . . . “pressing toward the mark of the high calling.” . . .”running with perseverance the race set before us.” . . .”

Remember, IT’S ALL ABOUT HIM! When you grow tired or weary in the journey, think of Christ and His journey for us . . . THIS PUTS EVERYTHING IN PERSPECTIVE.

“. . . not unto Men”

Finally, we are not here to please men. We are here to please GOD. Remember what Christ said about the greatest commandment . . . “love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength” and then “love your neighbor as yourself.” If we get this priority right, then ALL WILL BE WELL!

Prayer for the Journey

Lord, Remind us to be Joyful. May all we do be pleasing to You. As stated in the Psalms, “Let the words of our mouths, and the meditations of our hearts, be acceptable in Your sight.”

Scripture Passage: Acts 17:16-34

While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was deeply troubled by all the idols he saw everywhere in the city. He went to the synagogue to debate with the Jews and the God-fearing Gentiles, and he spoke daily in the public square to all who happened to be there. He also had a debate with some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers. When he told them about Jesus and his resurrection, they said, "This babbler has picked up some strange ideas." Others said, "He's pushing some foreign religion." Then they took him to the Council of Philosophers. "Come and tell us more about this new religion," they said. "You are saying some rather startling things, and we want to know what it's all about." (It should be explained that all the Athenians as well as the foreigners in Athens seemed to spend all their time discussing the latest ideas.) So Paul, standing before the Council, addressed them as follows: "Men of Athens, I notice that you are very religious, for as I was walking along I saw your many altars. And one of them had this inscription on it--`To an Unknown God.' You have been worshiping him without knowing who he is, and now I wish to tell you about him. "He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn't live in man-made temples, and human hands can't serve his needs--for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need there is. From one man he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand which should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries. "His purpose in all of this was that the nations should seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him--though he is not far from any one of us. For in him we live and move and exist. As one of your own poets says, `We are his offspring.' And since this is true, we shouldn't think of God as an idol designed by craftsmen from gold or silver or stone. God overlooked people's former ignorance about these things, but now he commands everyone everywhere to turn away from idols and turn to him. For he has set a day for judging the world with justice by the man he has appointed, and he proved to everyone who this is by raising him from the dead." When they heard Paul speak of the resurrection of a person who had been dead, some laughed, but others said, "We want to hear more about this later." That ended Paul's discussion with them, but some joined him and became believers. Among them were Dionysius, a member of the Council, a woman named Damaris, and others.

Personal Reflections from God’s Word

Paul was troubled by the many idols he saw being worshiped. He began to tell those around him about Jesus. They began to talk this “foreign religion” that they were hearing about. Not only were they hearing, but it made sense to them . . . the things that Paul was telling them. Paul saw one altar that had the inscription, “To an Unknown God.” He turned this into a mission opportunity and began to say, let me tell you about this unknown God that you have already been worshiping.

How about that for an entrance to witnessing! We can learn a valuable lesson from Paul experience. Today, people all around us are worshiping their own idols (money, job, material possessions, etc.) and we have an opportunity to find ways (just as Paul did) to share Jesus – the ANSWER for all of life’s questions. He can replace any emptiness that anyone may have. If it is the need for money or material things, Jesus would say, “Give it all away and follow me.” If it is a job or prestige, Jesus would say, “the least of these shall inherit the kingdom.” The answers aren’t found in what we have or how much material wealth we can accumulate, but in Jesus, the one who will pour out the blessings – “pressed down, shaken together, and running over” when we give it all to Him. When we share, some (just as Paul experienced) will believe and want to hear more. “GO TELL!”

Prayer for the Journey
Lord, Remove the things that keep us from experiencing the blessings you want to be ours. Help us, like Paul, look for ways to talk about YOU and when we share, may others hear and believe – wanting to hear more about YOU. Amen!

For the choir director: A psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be astounded. They will put their trust in the LORD. Oh, the joys of those who trust the LORD, who have no confidence in the proud, or in those who worship idols. O LORD my God, you have done many miracles for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them. You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings. Now that you have made me listen, I finally understand-- you don't require burnt offerings or sin offerings. Then I said, "Look, I have come. And this has been written about me in your scroll: I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your law is written on my heart." I have told all your people about your justice. I have not been afraid to speak out, as you, O LORD, well know. I have not kept this good news hidden in my heart; I have talked about your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of your unfailing love and faithfulness. LORD, don't hold back your tender mercies from me. My only hope is in your unfailing love and faithfulness. For troubles surround me-- too many to count! They pile up so high I can't see my way out. They are more numerous than the hairs on my head. I have lost all my courage. Please, LORD, rescue me! Come quickly, LORD, and help me. May those who try to destroy me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace. Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, "Aha! We've got him now!" But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, "The LORD is great!" As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord is thinking about me right now. You are my helper and my savior. “I waited patiently for the Lord.”

“Waiting patiently!” . . . Quite the oxymoron wouldn’t you say? In our mad rush to do everything, time has become our most prized commodity. Rarely, if ever, does anyone WAIT, PATIENTLY. Yet, this is exactly what Christ uses to teach us valuable lessons. Giving us immediate responses would stifle our growth rather than stretch and make us better in the long run. So whenever you are growing weary of the process, trust His timing and WAIT. Remember that the blessings to follow, come from Him.

“He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me.”

Picture it! He not only restores us to solid ground, but He also makes sure that we are steady so as not to fall over. Just picturing this helps me understand the awesomeness of God. He doesn’t just restore us to a safe place, but he literally makes us stable before letting us go. Aren’t you glad about that? So many times CHRIST IS the rock and will always be there to set our feet on solid ground.

““Many will see and be astounded.”
When Christ does something incredible in your life, many are going to see it. It doesn’t stop there, however. When the incredible thing is done, he expects us to give Him the credit. Don’t allow the incredible ACTS OF GOD to go unnoticed in your daily walk. GO TELL SOMEBODY . . . THEN THEY’LL NOT ONLY SEE BUT HEAR THE AWESOMENESS OF GOD, AND BE ASTOUNDED BY IT, TOO!

Prayer for the Journey
Lord,
Teach us patience! Grow us by leading us to places of WAIT. When we are there, help us to find our REST in you. When the answers come, give us the words to speak that will glorify and honor you and cause those who see and hear it to be astounded at your greatness.

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.

“Walking in the Light”

Recently, the warmer weather has been so refreshing. I’m not sure about you, but winter has a way of feeling “dark.” Being inside to escape the cold and (at least this year) damp weather, brings about feelings of melancholy (at least, that’s how it feels to me). I love the refreshing warm air and birds chirping outside. Just this week, Jonathan was excited about two chickens that he saw outside nibbling away on the tree stump just outside our window . . . turns out that the two chickens were two red-headed Woodpeckers. Regardless, they reminded us of God and He is always providing for our needs (even if you’re a red-headed Woodpecker).

Now, to the scripture reference! “Walking in the Light” refers to our daily walk with Jesus. Remaining in the light, means we never have to feel that dark and cold feeling of winter (being out of fellowship with Him). God wants to provide our needs (just like those of the Woodpeckers). Step out into the warm sunshine, close your eyes and thank God for being Jehovah Jireh (our provider).

I know this is a simple message, but it is one that bears repeating every day. Let someone know that Jesus is awesome, today. Tell someone how He is blessing your life . . . and if you can’t think of something, try looking outside to see if you find any Woodpeckers on a tree stump.

Lord,

Forgive us when we overlook how much you care for us. Help us, like all of your creation, to find our rest in the glow of your sunshine and warmth. Remind us that we are in relationship with you and need to continually express your praise in ALL THINGS.

Scripture: 1 John 5:13-17
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that. All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death. We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him. We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true—even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.

“Asking according to God’s Will”

The KEY to God hearing from us is in the way we ASK. This is a very difficult concept to grasp because human nature always gets in the way. God hears from us when we ask according to His will. What does that mean? Well, God already knows what He desires for us . . . our job is to seek Him first, then ask according to leading. It is really hard for me to explain, but I’ll try anyway. When Jonathan was ill with spinal meningitis, my own desire was to pray, God heal my child and let this thing pass from him and leave no ill effects. However, during this very trying time, I felt the Spirit of God leading me to pray, “Not my will but Yours be done.” God knew that my heart grieved over the situation we faced with Jonathan and the burden was too great for me to bear. He also knew the blessing that Jonathan would be as He moved and had His existence in Him. As I rested in Him, and placed Jonathan in His hands, God began to teach me that His WILL will not lead me where His GRACE would not keep me. God is continuing work His will and way in Jonathan’s life, and I’m reminded that His grace is sufficient . . . even when we don’t understand where His will is leading.

“Sin that does not lead to Death”

When we see a brother sin (one that does not lead to death) we should pray and God will give him life. Does this mean that we can pray for our brothers sins and they will be forgiven? As I looked over this statement, I had to read it several times for the truth to sink in. If we see a fellow believer sin (or do something wrong) we should pray and God will give him life. At first I felt this was about the brother who had sinned. I finally realized it was a mandate on prayer for me the one who sees the sin of a brother in Christ. The mandate is on the one seeing the sin of man. Praying in this way removes any human response and leaves the convicting to the Holy Spirit. This isn’t to say that we should say nothing to our brother. On the contrary, we are to “speak the truth in love.” Aren’t you glad that God already has it worked out? We only need to work His plan.

“If you’re born of God – the evil one cannot harm you”

If you are born of God, you cannot continue to live in sin. For those who are born of God, Jesus Christ keeps us safe and the evil one cannot harm us. WHAT A PROMISE! I am so grateful for this promise, for my human nature causes me to sin daily and it is only in KNOWING CHRIST, that I can say, “get thee behind me.” The power of God has saved me and one day I’ll be raised to be with Him for eternity – Hallelujah!

Lord,

Thank you for giving us plans to follow. Thank you for working out the details so that we only have to follow Your directions. Thanks also for giving life to those who see the sin a brother (and them in us) and teaching us about prayer in these situations. Remind us to pray, pray, and pray again before we ever speak - - - knowing that You are the one who gives life.

“Being called Children of God”

Not only does God grant us the choice of being called His Child, but when we accept His free gift of salvation, that is truly what we become – His Child. Think about it, we are God’s children. God wants to be our Father and we, His children. Embracing the awesomeness of being His floods my mind with images of a love that cannot be explained. Can you picture yourself in God’s embrace --- wrapped in His arms and resting in His awesome presence. There is nowhere in this life we can find such comfort and peace. Thank you, God, for allowing us to become your children. I love you, Father!

“Being Like Him”

What we will become is unknown to us. God’s plan will carry us to that place, and when He appears, we will become like Him. Imagine that, we will become LIKE HIM. Being like Christ means that we will be PERFECT. I cannot imagine what that will be like. Our sinful nature keeps us from ever knowing what PERFECTION is like; yet, we will become like Him --- knowing the perfection of a sinless one and finally becoming HOLY as He is HOLY. This will be HEAVEN!

“Seeing Him as He Is / The Hope of a Purity”

God has granted us the hope of purity in Him. We couldn’t possibly look on his holiness without be sinless ourselves . . . so God makes us like Himself and allows us to become sinless and share in the eternal hope of a PURE, HOLY life.

Prayer for the Journey

Lord,

How can we ever thank you enough for the awesome gift of being called your child? Knowing you as you are, and becoming holy like you is too awesome to even imagine. Thank you that your ways are higher than ours and the perfection you are bringing us to will allow us to become HOLY LIKE YOU. Thank you for offering us this great gift through the blood of your Son and our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen

“Surrounded by a great cloud of Witnesses”

Just think about it! We are surrounded by those who have been and those who are continuing to be strong examples of the Christian faith. That should give us strength to keep going. As I reflect upon the strong Christians in my past, I cannot help but think of their steadfastness and integrity. When the going got tough, they were always smiling and relying on the power of God to bring them through. I DO find power in that! God never forsook them, and He will never forsake me. How AWESOME is God? When you face your next test, just look back and remember the towers of faith in your life and seek your strength from the source they found – Christ our Lord.

“Throwing off the Weight of Sin”

So many things are hindrances to our growing in faith. Think of the things that you put ahead of spending time with God. What are they? Chances are they are the same things that most of us face – time, finances, patience, etc . . . I’m sure you’re getting the picture. God’s Word has much to say about each of these areas we find stressful. Regardless of the solutions we think of, God is the creator of all these things, and demands that we be good stewards in each of these areas. A song I remember from a children’s musical went like this, “everything that is – is His, what is under and beside us, the Father has supplied us, God’s still the owner – He’s just loaning it, you see – ‘cause everything that is – is His.” I like to think of it this way. God just wants us to be good managers. Clean out the clutter which weighs you down and keeps you from being able to run the race as God intends.

“Run with perseverance the Race”

Perseverance – never giving up! This is what Christ demands. We are to never give up but to keep running the race that Christ has marked out for us. Did you notice that Christ didn’t save WIN THE RACE, He said, “RUN THE RACE.” This is an important point. So many people give up when they can’t be the WINNER. Running the race the way Christ intended (never giving up) will bring its rewards in our future life. Being obedient and faithful means winning the crown of life that He has prepared for us. NOW THAT’S A REWARD!

“Fixing our Eyes on Jesus”

We must keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. Why? He is continually changing our course, and if we don’t have our eyes on Him, we can become lost in the blink of an eye. Keeping our eyes on Him means that we are continually adjusting our course to accommodate any changes He brings our way. Remember, God is counting on us to be faithful. This means we do not have to be the WINNER to be successful.

Prayer for the Journey

Lord,

Thank you for showing us how to RUN THE RACE. Your example took you to the cross, yet you bore the weight of our sin to do the will of the Father. Help us learn to trust you for the grace necessary in every change of course. Remind us, by the Holy Spirit, to keep running and adjusting in accordance with your plan. Keep our eyes FIXED ON YOU.

Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. ⁴They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. ⁵But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

“Preach the Word; be prepared!”

I believe that this opening exhortation is an encouragement for us to be close to the Savior by staying in His Word which prepares us for any situation. I know this is true because often the word of God has presented itself – just at the right time. Psalm 46 says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble.” Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.” So important is the power of God’s word, that repeated throughout His Word, God reminds us to stay plugged in and ready for life as it presents itself . . . “PREACH THE WORD; BE PREPARED!”

“Correct, rebuke, and encourage.”

Some responsibilities of our Christian walk are very difficult, yet very necessary. God’s word is not instructing us to confront people when we disagree with them, but He is asking us to apply His Word to situations that need correcting, rebuking, or encouraging. When we use His words, we can never go wrong. We also need to remember that all of this is to be done after much prayer and thoughtful consideration. Kenneth Blanchard, noted author and time management expert says, “None of Us is as good as all of Us.” The scriptures say, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them.” I believe that God expects us to weigh the possibilities in each situation before we step in. There is power in the body of Christ. Seeking wise counsel is ordained by God. We are given many examples and proverbs in the Bible dealing with getting advice from others. When seeking God's will, having a brother or sister in Christ confirm what you believe you understand can be helpful. Likewise, the wise advice of a mature Christian can help you see something you might have overlooked. However the key to this principle is wise counsel. Although God can reveal something to you through a relative or friend who doesn't have faith in Christ, be careful that what you are seeking is truly wise counsel and not just someone to agree with what you want to hear. Correct, rebuke, and encourage but proof it through God’s Word, and seeking the wise counsel of others.

“Sound Doctrine”

Recent circumstances in our nation, schools, and churches indicate there is a problem in applying all of the aforementioned principles. God is never to be left out of the equation. Indeed we are living in a society where men have itching ears – longing only for approval, not for true wisdom. Standing firm in our faith without wavering is God’s answer for those who truly desire wisdom. “Keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, and continue in the duties of ministry for which you are responsible.

Consider the reward when we allow God to work in us. He will manifest himself to others through our obedience and faithfulness to Him.

Prayer for this Week

Lord,

Forgive our lack of preparedness. Help us to correct, rebuke, and encourage one another – only according to Your Word – and after seeking wise counsel from others.

Finally, help us be open to hearing constructive instruction when given after wise counsel; and afterward, let us be thankful that You are our Refuge and Strength – a very present help in time of trouble.

Personal Reflections

Today, I’m learning more about the “straight and narrow.” The way of the Lord is very difficult to achieve in our own strength. It is becoming more and more clear to me that God means surrender (COMPLETE SURRENDER). Those who will follow Christ must first deny themselves. The denial that Christ is speaking of is the same as He, himself displayed before his disciples and followers. Christ, himself, gave up His life to do the will of the Father in heaven. We, too, must be willing to lay aside our own lives to follow the cause of Christ. THAT ISN’T EASY! Our sinful nature keeps getting in the way of our OBEDIENCE to God. It isn’t easy to deny ourselves when we are so easily distracted by our humanness.

Secondly, Christ says, “take up your cross.” Although we think this means to take our burdens and bring them to Jesus, what I’m learning this passage truly means is to TAKE ON THE SUFFERING OF CHRIST. When Christ ascended to heaven, he promised us a COMFORTER to be our guide. He knew the suffering that we would have to endure as we served Him faithfully. NO MORE TRUTH COULD BE EVIDENCED AS THIS. Consider the state of our Nation, Schools, and even Church. We are becoming a nation that is growing further and further away from the principles we established ourselves upon. Our schools have removed any mention of the word Christ or faith. We must not speak of these things because we may offend someone . . . (guess what? We are, it’s Christ Himself). Each time we fail to mention His name (the name above all names), we once again put Him back on the cross of shame.

Finally, Christ says, “follow me.” This, too, NOT SIMPLE to do. Following Christ is the most difficult thing we could ever choose to do, but the reward far outweighs any hardships that we may face. Following Christ means that we are to go in the way He set before us, NEVER TURNING BACK TO OUR OLD NATURE.

Prayer for this Week

O God, forgive our failure to truly live as you direct us to live. Help us in our weakness, strengthen our resolve to SERVE YOU WITHOUT WAVERING. Help us to endure the suffering by denying ourselves, taking up our cross, and genuinely follow You (the Author and finisher of our faith).

Personal Reflections

In this passage, we are given the characteristics that should be evident in our lives as Christians. The first and foremost characteristic is LOVE. Genuine love for our fellow man is, as the scripture states, is “the bond of perfection.” Having this type of love requires many other qualities that the Holy Spirit gives when we accept Christ as Savior. These other qualities are the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. As you can see, exemplifying these gifts of the Spirit in our lives will draw people to the love of our Savior (which is our purpose as Christians).

Next, we are to allow the PEACE OF GOD to rule our hearts. As I interpret this passage, God wants us to be able to lie down at night with a clear conscience. Knowing His peace means we have done things according to His plan for us. This is impossible in our own strength, but God is gracious by giving us His word (through scripture) to guide our thoughts and actions. As seen in verse 16, “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you RICHLY.” This means that we must allow the words of Christ to speak for us in all situations. God’s words are the ones that convict and bring change. Our personal testimony (our words) can attest to this fact, but the Word of the Lord is where the power is.

Finally, in EVERYTHING, we are to give thanks which brings honor and glory to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Prayer for this Week

Lord, I pray the power of Your Word to indwell us, and speak through us this week. May the opportunities we have to speak of Your great mercy be tempered with love (the bond of perfection) you so lovingly provide through the Holy Spirit which indwells us. Amen!

Personal Reflections from God’s Word

We are justified by our Faith through Jesus Christ. When we rest solely on God’s grace, we can truly know His peace. Isn’t it amazing that God knew we couldn’t “measure up.” This is why he wants us to depend on Him and His incredible mercy and grace. Even when we fall incredible short of what God has intended for us, He has provided (through His Son, Jesus) reconciliation and restoration – bringing back to a right relationship with Himself.

This amazing story of God’s reconciliation is just beginning. In verse 6, God says, “while we were still weak”, Christ died for the ungodly. This means that while we were at our worst (darkest of our sin state), Christ chose to forgive us and provide a way for us to restore our relationship with Him. This justification (by His blood), comes with a great deal of expectation. God expects for us to exercise our “new-found” right relationship, by choosing to follow Him rather than depending on our own UNDERSTANDING and handling of situations and circumstances in our own strength.

Eternal life is a free gift. It is offered by God to ANY who will believe. Trust Him and depend on his atoning sacrifice to save you and perfect you before the Father in heaven.

Hallelujah! What A Savior.

Personal Reflections from this Passage

As Christians, we are all connected by a common cause. This is why Paul states his affection for fellow Christians and their dedication to the carrying out of God’s Great Commission. He continues to say that he prays for them WITHOUT CEASING. How refreshing to know that there is someone praying for your witness and also for your well-being. Have you ever longed to see someone who has been away for a while? Perhaps a serviceman servicewoman, or a relative who lives away, or even a dear friend who you haven’t heard from in a long time. Circumstances can surely prevent us from seeing, hearing, and even visiting with those we hold so dear, but they can never take their memory from our hearts. This is what Paul felt for his fellow laborers and friends. The separation that kept them from one another only made the desire to see, hear, and visit with them stronger. Yet, his longing to see them went beyond the mere bonds of a friendship reconnect. Paul wanted to impart some spiritual gift that would strengthen and encourage them. Imagine that! A Testimony of faith to encourage and refresh. We all need that.

Personal Reflections from God’s Word
As the prophecy of ages was being foretold, we are given hope in a Savior who will establish His Kingdom among us and give us peace. All this will be established in Him. All of ETERNITY rest in Him and for Him. We are here to bring honor and glory to Him for His bountiful promise in the scripture.

The old saying is INDEED true! - “God said it, I believe it, and that settles it.” AMEN!

Personal Reflections

Can you imagine an Angel of the Lord appearing to us in such glory? I believe that we, too, would be “sore afraid.” I am convinced that the Angel appeared to Mary and Joseph just to reassure them that ALL IS WELL. He comes to us as well – just to let us know that He, too, has our backs. It’s when we try to control our lives in our own strength that things become difficult. The Savior wants us to depend on Him and trust that He will take care of us. Just like Mary and Joseph, he will make room for us when we trust him. Our accommodations may be less than what we would like but exactly what is necessary to “get the job done.”

It is so nice to know that our Savior has our needs covered. JUST TRUST HIM.

Prayer for this Week

Lord, help us trust that you have already taken care of every need we have. We can rest knowing that the God of our world is CARING FOR US. MERRY CHRISTMAS, INDEED! JOY TO THE WORLD.

Scripture Reference: Psalms 37:3-5

"Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this."

Personal Reflections

"Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture." Although this is a very short verse, it packs a whallop. We must trust in the Lord and do good. God requires that we trust Him. He has prepared and planned our days on this earth, so it is only fair that we should trust Him. He also says, do good. This, I must admit, I get wrong so often. Doing good means that we live out our lives every day in such a manner that we can lay our head down at night and have no regrets over things that we have done or said. Oops! Lord please forgive my weakness in not trusting you when I know I should.

"Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart." I've heard this scripture abused so many times. Well meaning people have often stated that God wants to give us the desires of our heart (wealth, fame, material goods, etc). We have to look more closely at this word. The first part of the verse says, "Delight yourself in the Lord." In order for the Lord to bless us and give us the desires of our hearts, we must first be aligned with His plan for our lives (this is delighting ourselves in Him).

Finally this word tells us, "Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this." When we commit ourselves to PLEASING GOD, this shows our trust and reverance for him. Only when we stive for this kind of excellence will God be pleased with us and pour out his blessings on us.

Prayer for this Week

Lord, forgive our weakness in living our lives as though we feel your provisions aren't enough. May we show you more respect by TRUSTING without question. Let us rest in your sufficiency and grace - knowing that this is ALL WE NEED.

When I read this Psalm, it reminds me of the awesomeness of God’s creation. He has created everything to bring honor and glory to Him (who alone is worthy). Everyone sees His creation and speaks of its beauty (a language all people understand). His Word has proven itself to be righteous and holy. His word speaks to the saved and unsaved about the consequences of our sin.

Like all of creation, we must let the words of our mouth and the meditations of our hearts be pleasing to the one who created and made us to have fellowship with himself.

What an awesome and holy God we serve!

Prayer for this Week

Lord, help us speak you worth in everything we say or do. May our wills be joined to yours and the glory of our actions resound your praise throughout the earth. Amen!

Just a thought - - - "Do you think that our land needs healing?" Thoughts often flood my mind asking, "How long, O Lord, will you put up with our lack of regard for you and a sense of moral decency?" As I reflected on these things during my devotional time, I thought of this scripture and decided to meditate on the deep meaning of its instruction.

First of all, it calls out Christians, God's people. When thinking about our declining values system, I must admit that I often think of those who deny any association with Godly living or even want to include Christ in any decision making process. Why then would the words spoken in this scripture passage be directed at CHRISTIANS? Doesn't Christ know that the moral decay of our society rest on the shoulders of our Governmental Officials, who when even professing a believe in a higher power, continue to deny prayer, posting of the Ten Commandments, and any mention of the word God in most political events? Certainly He does! How much worse - THEN - is it when we, who are called by His name, stand by silently and let it happen without even a word in support for Godly values. To ignore that there is a problem is denying reality. Christ was right to call out Christians. We are to be HOLY (set apart) and different from a Godless society. We can make a difference, SO STAND UP AND LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD!

Secondly, God qualifies the way we are to come to Him. The way in which we are to approach God is in humility, on our knees, seeking his face, turning from our evil ways. NOW THERE'S A QUALIFIER! God wants our attention when we come to Him. To focus on Him in the way He requires means we are totally dependent upon Him. THIS IS WHAT HE REQUIRES! The sooner we realize that His ways are INDEED higher than ours, the better off we will be as a person, nation, and society.

Finally, when we come to Christ in this way, he will hear from heaven, forgive our sin, and heal our land. Yes! Our land needs healing. We must begin to take our calling (called by His name) seriously. When we stand idly by and watch from the sidelines, the devil is gaining ground. He will never win the ultimate victory, for that price was paid at Calvary. He does, however, claim a victory from those who are called by His name. Hand-in-hand - TOGETHER - we can make a difference. Lets STAND STRONG and show society how strong GOD IN US can be.

Prayer for the Week

Lord, help us live up to our calling as CHRISTIANS. May we honor your name by allowing GOD IN US to CONTOL our will and our way. Amen.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: "For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

What does it mean "to be called according to His purpose?" When I think of this passage it makes me reflect upon Christ's life. What was His purpose as He walked among men? His purpose was to do the Father's will. Ours then, is the same. What, then, does it mean "to be called according to His purpose?" We are to glorify the Father in heaven. Therefore everything we do or say must be done in a way as to reflect Christ's love to a world that is lost without Him. In this way, we honor Him and bring respect (or glory) to His name and also conform ourselves to His image.

Because we believe in Christ, we know that one day we will be reunited with Him in heaven. This is our future hope. INDEED - "If God be for us, who can be against us?" This passage also says that Christ is INTERCEDING for us. I can think of no greater spokesperson, can you? Christ, Himself, is talking to the Father in our behalf. For this reason alone, I desire to have RELATIONSHIP with Christ (as my Savior). Thank you God, for a merciful Savior who pleads my case to you.

Nothing can separate us from the love of God. Hallelujah! What a Savior. This is FUTURE HOPE. Knowing this and believing that God's ways are higher than ours, we must work harder at conforming to His image. I must ask myself EVERYDAY, "how much do I look like Christ?" I know this sounds strange, but if we are not looking more and more like Christ, we aren't living as He requires. Strive to become MORE LIKE HIM!

Prayer for today

Lord, help us to look more like You every day, because in doing so we'll walk more like, talk more like, and do more deeds that resemble the acts of Christ as He walked this earth. May someone see Christ in us today and every day that you give us to show Your love.

Personal Reflections from God's Word

God is at work drawing us to him every minute of every day. When we face temptations and trials, He desires that we “come to him.” He says that if we will come to Him, He will give us rest. I don’t know about you, but I often become tired of the journey and it is awesome that he gives me rest. Simply by speaking His name, our burdens become lighter because He is Jehovah Jireh, our strength and provider.

God desires that we yoke up to him. “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me”, he says. When I hear the work YOKE, I automatically think of oxen that have yoked together to accomplish heavy work. While one Ox may experience great difficulty accomplishing the work, being yoked to another (equally as strong and able) the burden becomes lighter for the two. When we yoke up with Jesus, he bears the heavy burden and our work becomes easy. Trust Jesus to make your burdens lighter. He desires this!

When we yoke ourselves to the master, he not only lightens our burdens, but he teaches us about himself. The more we learn about him, the deeper our love will grow for him. Our hunger for him will also grow as we learn of him.

Prayer for this Week

Adoration

Lord, I adore you for carrying the weight of sin for the whole world, but especially for carrying that burden for me, personally. Your loving-kindness is always steadfast and sure.

Confession

Lord, I confess my weakness to you. You are the source of my strength. Help me grow stronger in you.

Thanksgiving

Lord, I am thankful that you have said, “Come unto me.” Remind me, dear Lord, to seek you first.

Supplication

Lord, teach me more of you. Help me grow in my hunger for your word and ways.

Personal Reflections from God's Word

God's plans for us are to prosper us and not to harm us; they are to give us a hope and a future. This word is fairly straightforward and simple - - - God has already arranged the days He has planned for us. Our task is to stay on that ROAD or PLAN that He has already set in motion. His free will allows us to choose, daily, how we will respond to the time He has given us. As I, you, too have felt times when God was close and things come together perfectly. These times serve as reminders to us that God is in control and His plan is RIGHT for us.

When we get off of that ROAD (or path that He has chosen), God has provided a way for us to come back to Him - - - PRAYER! He also promises us that He is LISTENING. "When you come and pray to me, I will listen." God wants relationship with us, but we have to choose to COME TO HIM (free will).

Finally, God says that no matter where we find ourselves, when we seek Him with all our hearts, we will find Him. Isn't that an AWESOME PROMISE? Remember that the next time you feel that He is far away, then SEEK HIM WITH ALL YOUR HEART. His provision is that he will bring us back to HIMSELF if we only turn to Him. I LOVE GOD'S PLAN! Don't you?

Prayer for this Week

Adoration

Lord, I love you and desire relationship with you more than anything else. Thank You for being steadfast and sure.

Confession

Lord, I confess that I'm the one that moves when I don't feel You near. Please forgive me for being so weak.

Thanksgiving

Lord, I am thankful for your plan (Your provision) for me. Help me to remember to SEEK YOU FIRST in all things.

Supplication
Lord, I ask your healing presence to be with my brother, Doug. Give him rest, and bring swift healing from the headaches and pain that he has felt following his surgery. Blessed your church family at FBC with your awesome presence and power to accomplish the plans you have for us.

Prayer for Our Daily Walk

Lord, forgive us when we seek to answer life's problems on our own. Remind us of Yourself by the power of the Holy Spirit that resides in Your Holy temple.

     God wants us to be a reflection of Himself to the World

Our behavior is to be distinctly different from those who do not know God, and it must not reflect the same kinds of sin of a corrupt godless culture.
What "good works" do they see us doing that reflect well on our heavenly Father? How does our faith cause us to behave differently from anyone else?
Jesus came to do the will of His Father, not to replace it with His own. We are to do the same thing.
God is after inward change not outward compliance. He doesn't want religous fanatics, but transformed men and women. He wants people who love to do His will.
The only way to be "perfect" as the Father is "perfect" is to be clothed, through faith, with the righteousness of Christ. This is necessary, for without holiness "no one will see the lord."

Prayer for Today

Adoration
Lord, "HOLINESS" is what I desire. In my own strength, I fall terribly short. Only when I stand before You, clothed in Christ's Righteousness, am I "perfect." Forgive me for my sin and clothe me with the Righteousness of Christ.

Confession
Sometimes it is hard to forgive and press forward. Forgive me for giving up so easily. Encourage me in Your word and through others that will lift and help shape my Godly character. For those who seek to tear "me or others" down, protect me and place a spirit of love in their hearts. Help me also to have a heart of compassion.

Thanksgiving
Thank you for doing the will of the Father. You are perfect and the only one who is. Thank you bor showing us how to live. Guide my thinking and doing for I am too weak to control my human will. You, Lord are more powerful than any foe or circumstance that I will face. Be my Strength and Shield of Protection.

Supplication
Place a thirst and hunger for Your word in my soul. Help me to start each day in your presence and stay with you throughout the day. As Paul stated, "let me live in an attitude of prayer - continually.

Lord,

I hunger and thirst for You. Draw me EVEN closer to Yourself.

Living the Word (this week): Acts 4

Peter and John Before the Sanhedrin
"The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. They seized Peter and John, and because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day. But many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand."

Personal Reflections

The 4th Chapter of Acts is a powerful story of God's provision and help for those who love Him, who trust in His Word, and who remain in His presence. Peter and John faced great pressure from the religioius leaders who where anxious over the teachings that Christ was the resurrection of the dead. Because it was late in the day, Peter and John were placed in prison overnight. The next day, the interrogations began. The elders, high priests, and lawyers all wanted to know by what power they were able heal the cripple at the temple gates.

Jesus: A Sure Foundation
Peter and John's reply was a bold one - - - "It is the stone that you builders rejected, the one who has become the chief cornerstone. It is by the power of Jesus of Nazareth that this man who stands before you is healed. The one that you put to death and who God raised on the third day and in whom salvation is found.

Jesus: Provision and Strength
When the cripple begged Peter and John for money, their response was, "Silver and gold have I none, but what I do have I give you freely - Rise and be healed." Instantly, the cripple was healed. The strength and provision for this work to be done was only in the name of Jesus, and Peter and John knew this provision having been with the Master.

Jesus: Confidence and Hope
Peter and John definately felt the confidence and hope of Christ as they stood firmly and boldly proclaimed Him the resurrection of the dead. When the elders asked them to go and keep silent, their reply was, "how can we keep silent about the things we have seen and heard."

Prayer for Today

Adoration
Lord, Our confidence is in You. You alone are to be praised and adored for your marvelous provisions and mercies to us.

Confession
Lord, I am often less bold than I should be in my witness. Help me to become more like Peter and John, Standing firmly on the Rock.

Thanksgiving
Lord, Thank you for the power in your name. Remind me of your awesome power when I am weak and forget to call on that PROVISION from you.

Supplication
Lord, First Baptist is relying on you for our strength. Work in us and through us to become the salt and light in Travelers Rest.

Personal Reflections
This text has become one of my favorites. Primarily due to the awesome anthem we sing "The Majesty and Glory of Your Name." The wedding of text to the glorious melody in this anthem brings the awesomeness of God's creation to mind as we sing it.br>

A Psalm of David.

There are three things that spoke to me as I read this scripture.
1) God's Name is to be revered above all names.
2) He has placed man in a place of dominion over other things He created
3) God is mindful of His creation and desires to be in constant fellowship with Us

Prayer for Today

Adoration
Lord, Your name is excellent and You are above all things. I Praise You, Lord.

Confession
Lord, I'm sorry for being a poor steward in caring for the things you have placed me in charge of. I need your help in exercising dominion over the things you have placed in my care. I do want to honor you in caring for all of your creation.

Thanksgiving
Lord, I thank you for the beauty of your creation. Everyday I am reminded of you through the beauty that surrounds me. All of your creation speaks of your glory.

Supplication
Lord, guard our relationships with you. Help us realize how important it is to seek you first. You have promised us that if we seek you, we will find you; if we seek with all our hearts.

Prayer for My Personal Walk

Lord, make me mindful of your glorious creation and help me to honor you by showing respect in all things.

Personal Reflections
The text of this Psalm is contained in one of my favorite Choral Anthems. I often use this verse with those experiencing illness, troubles, or difficult times when I am visiting and meeting new people in the community. The words of comfort found in this scripture point to the HOPE that we all have in Christ Jesus, Our Lord.

God is Our Safe Harbor

WOW! What a picture is painted in the opening lines of this Psalm. Imagine the mountains falling into the heart of the sea and the mighty quaking of the earth there would have to be to cause this happening. Yet, even in this kind of catastrophe, we will not FEAR because God has it all in His CONTROL. What a mighty God we serve . . . "Angels bow before Him; Heaven and Earth adore Him." I am thankful that we have access to God through Christ our Savior. I will never fear because GOD IS MY REFUGE.

God is My Strength
"There is a River whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the most High dwells." The place where Christ's Spirit dwells is in the hearts of men. Scripture tells us that God's tabernacle is with us. This passage goes on to say that Nations are in uproar . . . SOUND FAMILIAR? It also says that God speaks and the Earth melts - NOW THAT'S STRENGTH. Aren't you glad that God is your STRENGTH.

Be STILL and KNOW
OK, here is the catch. You have to be STILL, then you can KNOW that He is God. I believe that it is imperative that we be STILL (rest in Him and allow His presence to speak to us), then we can truly KNOW Him. He assures in this passage that He will be exalted among nations and in all the earth. This is the only place we can find the REST (peace and security) of the God of Jacob who is our FORTRESS.

Adoration
Lord, there is NONE like You. You alone have the POWER over all things.

Confession
Lord, even though I know you are my Refuge and Strength, I often fail by trying things in my own strength. Forgive me for showing you such disrespect. Help me to always TRUST in you FIRST.

Thanksgiving
Lord, thank you for being a SHELTER where I can find REST. I need you for the ASSURANCE in all things.

Supplication
Lord, calm the raging storms in my life. Be the peace speaker and resolve the clutter that I create that clouds me from your AWESOME presence.

Living the Word (this week): Luke 5:1-11

"So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!” For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.” So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him."

Personal Reflections

This is probably the all time favorite scripture for teaching about obedience. The lessons from this passage are fundamental to us as believers. It also commands us to be servants. Dive in and explore the the wealth of God's teaching for His disciples.

Focusing on Jesus

Jesus asked Simon to push out a bit from shore so that He may teach the people. It finally occured to me that the crowd demanded that this be done. Jesus realized that the crowd would'nt be able to hear or see Him as He taught, therefore He requested that Simon push out from shore. This made it easier for everyone to hear and understand what Jesus had to say. It also dawned on me that this exercise also focused the people on what Jesus was doing. We must be ready to receive God's word when He speaks. When we experience Jesus desiring to do something in our lives, we must focus, intently, on what He is trying to teach us.

Obedience brings Blessing

When Jesus had finished teaching the crowd, He instructed Simon to push out into the deep. Simon's response was one of obedience. Lord, We've fished all night and caught nothing, but if you say for us to go into the deep, I will do it. This is what God desires of each of us . . . THAT WE TRUST HIM ENOUGH TO DO WHAT HE SAYS.

God's Blessings are Extraordinary

When Simon let down his nets, the catch was so great that the nets were breaking. Simon called to the other boats and they, too, experienced the wealth of God's blessings. Even when we are tired and have given up, God is able. When we have reached the end of ourselves, it is then that God can do the EXTRAORDINARY.

Givng God our Lives in Service

When the fishermen got back to shore, they FORSOOK ALL and followed Him. This is not only God's requirement, but His desire for all who would follow Him. We must DENY self and say, "Wherever You lead, I'll go."

Prayer for Today

Adoration
Lord, You are a great teacher. I desire your instruction and focus for my life, because you know what is best for me.

Confession
Lord, I often grow tired and weary in the daily demands of life. Help me remember the blessing of the fishermen when I reach the end of myslef. It is then that I'll honor You in OBEDIENCE.

Thanksgiving
Lord, thank you for uderstanding my weakness. Thank you for being the source of strength when I exhausted my own resources. Thank you for allowing me to be a vessel in your hands.

Supplication
Lord, may the music ministry of FBC be pleasing to you. May we offer you ourselves so you can do something EXTRAORDINARY through us.

Prayer for My Personal Walk

Lord, forgive me when I become weary of the journey. Strengthen me for the tasks you place before me and may I be JOYFUL in the work you bring my way.

Personal Reflections

This has always been one of my favorite scripture passages. I have actually adopted it as my life verse. It says what I know to be true about the Savior. He nevers fails to provide the answer when we seek him and in faith rely on his power to overcome any circumstance.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
Trusting in the Lord with all our hearts means that we do nothing without first seeking his direction . . . "NOT AN EASY TASK." How often do we get caught up in life only to leave God out of our decisions? I must say, for me, it is all too often. Knowing to do right (relying on Christ's power), yet trying to walk in my own way or strength. Walking in our own way has a way of humbling oneself. I always get things messed up when I run ahead of God. Too often, God just wants my attention. "Do you ever feel this way?" Trusting in God means that we (as Paul stated) live in an attitude of prayer. Think about it, if you and I would remain in open communication with God during the day, our lives would become much more meaningful and productive. Trusting in God means we commit everything to him.

Lean not on your own understanding
It sounds strange, but God doesn't want us to trust ourselves. This is why he said, "I'm going away, but I'm leaving you the comforter." THAT'S RIGHT! He left the Holy Spirit to endwell us and give us wisdom for daily living. How comforting. I don't have to have the answers . . . (you either). One of the most powerful things we can do is to DENY SELF. Christ wants us to do just that. "Deny yourself, and take up your cross, DAILY." Trust him for wisdom and understanding. He desires that we have "ABUNDANT LIFE" filled with joy and peace. He ALONE can offer this kind of understanding.

In all your ways acknowledge him
Acknowledge him in EVERYTHING! No grey areas here. God desires that we come to him with EVERYTHING! Isn't that amazing? God loves us so much that he desires to spend his whole day with us . . . and by the way, "he never slumbers nor sleeps (which means he has our backs while we rest at night)." What an amazing God we serve. Give everything to him and know that his will is PERFECT. It's a good way to live; and by the way, I've tried it and he is faithful. I know that I'm speaking to the choir (no pun intended), for you, too, have experienced his faithfulness. STOP now and thank him for taking our EVERYTHING and being faithful to help us manage it.

And he will direct your paths
I don't know about you, but I really like that he has it all in his hands. Like we've heard over and over, "our days were ordered before we were even born." When we allow him to DIRECT us, we experience a bit of heaven here on earth. "I love you, Lord, and I lift my voice - to worship you O my soul rejoice; take joy my King in what you hear; may it be a sweet, sweet sound in your ear."

Adoration
Lord, I love you for holding EVERYTHING in your hands. You are mighty and awesome. Your ways are excellent.

Confession
Lord, I often strive to answer life's tough questions in my own strength. I'm thankful that you've given me the intellect to be able to think through life's questions; yet I still need your WISDOM for your ways are HIGHER and HOLY.

Thanksgiving
Lord, I'm thankful that you've already ordered my life. As I walk with you, direct my paths, and I'll give you the glory in ALL THINGS.

Supplication
Lord, I lift our church family to you. Watch over us and give us direction. We need your direction and wisdom to discern the plans you have for us.

Prayer for My Personal Walk

Lord, help me live the words of the song we sing: "With all my heart, I want to love you, Lord; and live my life, each day to know you more; all that is in me, is yours completely; I'll serve you only, with all my heart."

Personal Reflections
The Greatest of All Commandments

"Loving God with all our hearts, soul, strength, and mind." In this statement, God's instructions are clear, "We are to put Him first in all things, and we are to love our neighbors as ourselves." His instructions include the totality of our being (heart, soul, strength, and mind).

The Heart: Revelation 3:20

There should be no question why God mentions the heart first. "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me." The most important relationship anyone can have is the personal relationship with Christ. He seeks us to have relationship with Him; yet He allows us free will to open our hearts to Him. When we do this, the Holy Spirit comes to reside in us and give us wisdom for all situations of life. Therefore, we must first love Christ with our heart.

The Soul: Genesis 2:7

"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." God breathed life into man and our lives should be dedicated to honoring Him. A statement I once read is, "God's gift to us is life. Our gift to God is how we live it." It is important that we recognize our life's purpose should be spent bringing glory and honor to the one who gave us breath. When our lives are committed to Christ, then our souls will reflect the meaning and purpose for which we were created and given breath.

The Strength: 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

"And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong." God wants us to realize that He is our strength. In our weakness, He becomes our strength. His strength is perfect. His grace, indeed, is sufficient. The power of Christian living lies in keeping our lives connected to Him and relying on His power and might to transform us in our weakness.

The Mind: Romans 12:1-2

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." Our intellect should be transformed by the mind of Christ. We, like Jesus' example, should strive to be a servant. We must show the world that we love God desire to know His ways and plans for us. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us that He knows the plans he has for us; plans that give us hope and a future. Seeking the mind of Christ helps us understand His plans and purposes for us. We can understand His plans by maintaining the heart, soul, strength, and mind connection with Him.

Prayer for Today

Adoration
Lord, I love knowing that Your grace is sufficient. Thank you for supplying all our need. You are wonderful and worthy of our worship.

Confession
Lord, I grow weary in the journey sometimes. Forgive me for being weak. I confess that I need You to overcome my human-ness.

Thanksgiving
Lord, thank You, for being my strength. In my weakness, Your strength can be revealed and glory and honor be given You.

Supplication
Lord, guard our lives and keep us close to You. Be in the ministry of First Baptist and also in the lives of its membership. May we bring honor and glory to You and become salt and light to this community.

Prayer for My Personal Walk

Lord, help me rest in the sufficiency of Your grace. Focus my mind on the plans You have for me, and let me bring honor to You in my service.

I received this SERMON IN WORDS in an email. It spoke volumns to me about my Savior's tender mercies. I've decided to share it on this blog because it says everything that my heart could ever say about my Savior's love.

Adoration
Lord, I adore you for being my Shepherd. Often I wander away from your loving presence; it is then that You seek me. Thank You for being so loving and caring about Your sheep. You are so gracious and kind.

Confession
Lord, I'm sorry for being a wanderer. Forgive me for not keeping my eyes on You when I know that I should.

Thanksgiving
Lord, thank you for being faithful to forgive us when we confess our sin and turn away from our weaknesses.

Supplication
Lord, watch over my family. Especially watch over Jonathan and place your protection on Him (from the seizure activity that he has recently experienced). Help me stay close to You and avoid the temptations of my human nature.

Prayer for My Personal Walk

Lord, I am refreshed by Your contant love and care. Thank You for being my Shepherd. Help me REST in Your tender mercies and care.

"Surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses" --- In chapter 11 of Hebrews we are given a roll call of great men of faith. This roll call serves as an example for us. God expects the same commitment on our behalf as He did of Abraham, Moses, etc.

"Lay aside the weight of sin" ---How do we lay aside these entrapments? Repentance, that's how! We must lay our lives before God, daily. He expects us to remain clean and pure before Him. If we have sin in our lives, it weighs us down and keeps us from honoring Him. Confess these things and release the power of God free you from the weight that besets us.

Run the race with patience"---Running the race with patience means that we are guarded. When we run the race with patience, we are purposeful about our spiritual life and walk with God. When we are intentional, we will be focused on what God wants, rather than our own will and way.

"Looking to Jesus"---The only way to be successful in any endeavor is to put God first. He is the author and finisher of our faith. He alone provides what is necessary for us to be successful in our witness (just as He was there for those in Chapter 11).

Prayer for Today

Adoration
Lord, You are the author and finisher of my faith. Thank You. I would really mess things up and it is wonderful to know that Your strength and power will sustain me in all situations. Praise You for having my life in Your hands. I can rest in Your presence, secure.

Confession
Lord, I grow weary in running the race sometime. Forgive me for being so weak, and thank You for caring for me enough to provide me strength during these times.

Thanksgiving
Lord, thank You for giving us examples of faith in Your Word. When I think of how You moved and worked in their lives to bring glory and honor to Yourself, it is awesome to think that You can do the same through me. Thank You for using me, even though I am so unworthy of Your grace and mercies.

Supplication
"Take my life, lead me, Lord. Make my life useful to Thee."

Living the Word (this week): Isaiah 40:31

"They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint."

     Trust God and be obedient
     Renewal and refreshing are blessings from God
     Sometimes we have to wait on God's provisions

The earlier verses in this chapter of Isaiah tell us that even youth faint and grow weary, but the Lord never grows tired or weary and always understands where we are and what we need. Trusting God means that sometimes we must wait for the answers and not grow weary in doing so. Humanly, this is impossible, but when we REST IN HIM, we will not grow weary nor faint - for He is able to sustain and support us.

I love the imagery in this passage. I can see the ease of the Eagle in flight. That is an image of God's support and sustaining strength. I can see the wings outstreatched catching the wind and SOARING. We, too, are supported by that power of the Almighty. He is constantly the wind that supports our flight, and when we grow weary, we simply streatch out our wings and SOAR (allowing His might and power to lift us up and give us strength). What an awesome God. I love to soar in His presence. Today, I will rest in Him and allow His awesome power to lift me up. Thank you, Lord, for your awesome presence and power. Without You, nothing I do is possible.

Lord, You alone are worthy of my praise and adoration. I adore you and worship you because you my all in all. With You, anything is possible. You are wonderful, awesome, and mighty. Thank You for Your sustaining grace.

Confession
Sometimes it is difficult to wait. Teach me patience.

Lord, I am thankful for your power and support. This week when Jonathan had the seizure, my strength grew weary. This is when I felt Your sustaining grace. Thank you for uplifting me and getting me through this difficult time.

Supplication
Lord, I need your power and strength. I am weak, but You are strong. I grow weary, but You never tire. Help me Lord, to rely on You, and never in the power of my own strength and ways.

Lord, teach me to wait on You. Help me to remember that in waiting, You are growing me. Give me patience to WAIT.

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

Present my body, a living sacrifice. Wow! What a responsibility. Once again I'm awed by the power of Christ at work in us, for without His power it would be impossible to offer a pleasing sacrifice of our lives to Him. We are challenged in this scripture to 1) not conform to the ways of the world. This is a difficult task. The world offers many temptations and ease in the way of living to please and gratify the desires of our flesh. NOT Conforming to this world means that we consider the Lord's way above our own desires. How we are able to do this is through the 2)Renewing of our minds. To renew our minds is to allow God the authority over our own desires. Allowing God to move in us to bring the works that honor and gratify Him will renew us, and free us to receive His blessings. Finally, 3)self-transformation will show the world that we are SET APART for the perfect and holy will of God . . . "DOING THE WILL OF GOD BY FOLLOWING HIS COMMANDS AND LIVING THEM OUT BEFORE MEN."

Confession
I need renewal. You are the only source that can provide the renewing I need. All good and perfect gifts come from your hand and I am in need of your gifts (the ones you have chosen for me) this day and forevermore.
Thanksgiving
Thank you for the renewing of the mind. Only when we rid our minds of the clutter we make of things can we INDEED be refreshed. "Create in me a clean heart O God, and renew a right spirit within me."
Supplication
I need YOUR power to resist the thoughts and attitudes of my own will. Replace my will with Yours and help walk in the spirit, daily.

Lord, forgive me for my failure in conforming to this world's way. I desire to renew my thoughts and actions by offering my life to you. Only when you become Lord of my life (totally) can I experience the renewing and refreshing that your Spirit brings. Through Your power (the Spirit who lives within me) reside and preside over my daily circumstances.

This is one of my favorite scripture passages. As a musician, I guess I am attacted to anything having to do with music; yet, this scripture is about much more than music. It is a treatise on how we are to live our lives in reverence and respect to our Savior. I am always humbled by the instruction from God's word (especially when it comes to how we treat others around us). This passage says we are to teach and admonish one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. What is this passage saying to us? My personal reflections on this scripture are: 1) Psalms are our adorations for the Lord and Savior without whom our lostness would forever seperate us from the Father which is in heaven. This relationship must be first and foremost before any other relationship can be pursued. 2) Hymns are our love and respect for fellow Christians and Believers. We must strive for unity of purpose and spirit. The fellowship of believers is what this relationship is all about. 3) Spiritual Songs are the ways we allow the spirit to work in and through us to bring others to an awareness of God's great love. This is our relationship to the lost world. "Hearing comes by the Word of God" ... But how will they hear without us carrying the Word to them. This is why the Comforter was left with us to work God's perfect will out in our lives by continuing the work that Jesus began here on earth. When we trust God for guidance, he will help us establish each of these relationships, and work in and through us, daily.

Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:1-48

     God wants us to be a reflection of Himself to the World

Our behavior is to be distinctly different from those who do not know God, and it must not reflect the same kinds of sin of a corrupt godless culture.
What "good works" do they see us doing that reflect well on our heavenly Father? How does our faith cause us to behave differently from anyone else?
Jesus came to do the will of His Father, not to replace it with His own. We are to do the same thing.
God is after inward change not outward compliance. He doesn't want religous fanatics, but transformed men and women. He wants people who love to do His will.
The only way to be "perfect" as the Father is "perfect" is to be clothed, through faith, with the righteousness of Christ. This is necessary, for without holiness "no one will see the lord."

Prayer for Today

Adoration
Lord, "HOLINESS" is what I desire. In my own strength, I fall terribly short. Only when I stand before You, clothed in Christ's Righteousness, am I "perfect." Forgive me for my sin and clothe me with the Righteousness of Christ.

Confession
Sometimes it is hard to forgive and press forward. Forgive me for giving up so easily. Encourage me in Your word and through others that will lift and help shape my Godly character. For those who seek to tear "me or others" down, protect me and place a spirit of love in their hearts. Help me also to have a heart of compassion.

Thanksgiving
Thank you for doing the will of the Father. You are perfect and the only one who is. Thank you bor showing us how to live. Guide my thinking and doing for I am too weak to control my human will. You, Lord are more powerful than any foe or circumstance that I will face. Be my Strength and Shield of Protection.

Supplication
Place a thirst and hunger for Your word in my soul. Help me to start each day in your presence and stay with you throughout the day. As Paul stated, "let me live in an attitude of prayer - continually.

Amazing Grace - St. Olaf Choir

I heard the St. Olaf Choir last night at First Presbyterian CHurch, Greenville. The concert was tremendous and the name of God was glorified. Angelic is the only word to describe the voices. The harmonies were beautiful and the blend, perfect. The concert repertoire was varied and there was something for everyone to enjoy. I am also happy to see so many people who truly love good choral music. The church auditorium was full (which seats around 1200). Heavenly choir - Heavenly voices - and a truly worshipful experience. The gospel version of Amazing Grace above is one of the styles presented during the concert. I hope you will enjoy this setting

Amazing Grace Amazing Love

Sunday was a beautiful day. Dr. Walt Johnson from North Greenville University spoke in our Morning Worship Service. His text was Hebrews 12 (Surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses). Chapter 12 follows the FAITH chapter (chapter 11). Chapter 12 is the "therefore" chapter. Since the greats (Moses, Elijah, Abraham, etc.) have gone before us showing us the way, we can follow their example and throw off the weight of sin to run the race set before us. Dr. Johnson's sermon was challenging and reminded us of our purpose . . . to love God and give our lives "a living sacrifice."

Lord, I'm Amazed by You

Today's Scripture Passages Genesis 7-9; Matthew 3
Today's scripture reveals the story of Noah's Ark. Noah was granted God's favor and told that he and his sons were to replenish the earth. Further instructions were given Noah of what was clean and unclean. He made sacrifices to the Lord and was faithful to follow the Lord's commands. The Lord made a covenant with Noah . . . Never to destroy the earth and living things again and he set a rainbow in the sky as a reminder of his covenant with His people. This story is one of restoration. God restores His relationship with His people through Noah and his family (which extends to us today).

Personal Reflections and Insights
God desires our faithfulness and obedience. We must seek daily to honor him with our actions and service. God knows that we will fail, but wants us to trust Him and seek to follow His plan and ways for us. Just as God set the rainbow to remind Noah about His covenant; we, too, are to covenant with God to live according to His will for us . . . following His instructions as recorded in His Word.

Application of Today's Lesson
I will live in covenant with the Lord - giving thought to my actions and how they affect those whose path I cross.

Today's Scripture Passages Genesis: Chapters 4-7; Matthew 2

Today's reading in Genesis talked about the sinful nature of mankind and how God planned to destroy creation. Because Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord, God chose another way to accomplish His plan, and in its design, replenish the earth.

Personal Reflections and Insights God, again, reveals His soverignty over creation. I feel sorrow for my sinful nature and human-ness, yet know that God has provided a means by which I can enter heaven through His Son, Jesus. For God's grace and mercy toward me, I am thankful.

Jesus came to John the Baptist for Baptism. John said, "It is I that should ask for you to baptize me." Jesus, being submissive to the Father's will, was baptized of John and received the spiritual blessings of the Father. We must learn to be submissive to the Father's will.

Application of Today's Lesson Today, I will make an effort to tell someone about God's grace and mercy. I will try and point someone to the Savior and encourage them to experience his wonderful love (in me, but untimately through Him).
